Embracing my Mom Uniform
Confession: I have fully embraced the Mom Uniform.
I spent three hours at the rink on Sunday. Yup. 3. Could you imagine if I was in uncomfortable slacks and heels? Or even worse, a dress? Cue my Mom Uniform.
Jeans – always jeans. Always J. Crew.
Flat-ish shoes – never anything with a major heel. Last thing I need is a broken ankle. Vans or Sperrys.
Conservative top – no wardrobe malfunctions here. What if one of my boobs fell out at a birthday party? The horror.
Tinted moisturizer – that’s makeup, right?
Pearl stud earrings – classic.
Even as a working mom, jeans have crept into my daily routine. I’m fortunate enough to work for a company where that is acceptable. I’m usually scrambling around during the week, playing street hockey or on the floor building LEGOS. It totally makes perfect sense that my worlds have collided. Back in my glory days, I was all J. Crew or bust. Tailored pants. A fabulous shoe collection. I also had a job that required a business casual attire. I like to think that I’m still somewhat stylish. Maybe you haven’t even noticed my mom outfit.
I look at other moms that have their shizzit together. Hair done. Makeup on point and think to myself – wow. What time do they get up in the morning? We can barely get out of the door in the AM. Maybe I value my sleep too much. Maybe I know that this phase of my life will be over soon. Maybe I don’t care as much. Hey - I shower! That’s a plus. As a single parent, showering is one of the few times that I get some alone time.
I do enjoy getting dressed up. It’s an opportunity for me to escape the reality of my day-day-day life. Mainly because I have no idea how to work a curling iron or put on makeup. One of my guilty pleasures is a nice blow dry. I’m pretty sure I could conquer the world on those days.
Do you have a mom outfit?
