Is There a Wrong Way to do Summer?

Is There a Wrong Way to do Summer?

I just received a text message that said, “Is it summer yet?” because we are expecting like a million inches of snow tomorrow. Instantly my heart sank. Yikes. Summertime and the living's easy. Right? Ok Sublime. Not for everyone. It seems weird that I’m trying to figure out a summer schedule in March. Sure, there are people dreaming of the lazy days of summer, sunshine and dinner at the beach. Meanwhile over here, I’m trying to figure out what summer camp Ben will hate the least, if he needs to skate or not, who is going to watch Rocky for 10 days while I’m out of the country and about another million things that working Moms must line up for summer “vacation.”

In a perfect world, Ben would have no plans over the summer. Just like I did when I was a kid. We spent countless hours at the LaFlam Family pool perfecting our synchronized swimming routines and long days at the beach building sandcastles. The pressures of school and being on such a tight weekly schedule for most of the year is a lot for a little boy. His summer “vacation” doesn’t really look a whole hell of a lot different than this regular schedule. Of course, it would be great for him to have the summer “off.” But for me and every other working Mom, that just isn’t a reality. There will be a lot of juggling and spending time at Camp Grandparents this summer just like there was last year.

The past few summers haven’t been horrible by any stretch of the imagination. I’m in a position now where I can work from home on a flexible schedule. That allows me to squeeze in fun summer activities. Road trips. Fiesta. Baseball games. Beach days. Yes – beach days. (I know how fortunate we are to live where we do.) You name it and it’s probably crammed into our summer schedule somewhere. I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck. Even planning day trips can get expensive. But no matter what, I always figure it out. I know Ben will be fine. He will have a great summer and will be making memories. And more importantly, spending quality time with his Mom.
